VAN EATON GALLERIES and The Creative Talen Network (CTN) are thrilled to present - SCRIBBLIN' ON SCRAP an exhibition and sale of over 150 (!) original works by Disney character designer RIK MAKI.Originally from Vancouver Canada, .RIK MAKI began his career as a freelance cartoonist and advertising illustrator, working for the National Film Board of Canada before coming to America 1978. .He has spent the past 18 years designing characters for such contemporary animated classics as.THE LION KING ,..FINDING NEMO , . A BUGS LIFE , HERCULES , .THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME , .TREASURE PLANET , and DINOSAUR.A self-described "blue collar artist", Maki is addicted to the honesty of quick sketches. His work has been collected and published in two sketchbooks "Scribblin' Away at Mike's Cafe" and "Scribblin' On Scrap" (available from the Gallery) and this exhibition/sale is in fact an "unbound" sketchbook of sorts, with some of the most entertaining, surprising and lively images you're likely to find anywhere. Each piece is unique, and many take on the feel of artifacts, as the artist draws in his spare time on anything from copy paper and newsprint to used mail envelopes and discarded cardboard; you'll even find an entire series sketched on placemats from his favorite Studio City restaurant, and some particularly powerful and very personal portraits of some legendary baseball players (the artist had a previous career as a pitcher in the minor leagues when he was scouted and signed by Eddie Taylor of the NY Yankees at the age of 17. Maki played in the minors for 7 years.)The son of an artist, Rik Maki was influenced at a young age by the creators of Mad Magazine and such artsits as Willard Mullin (the Dean of American sports cartooning) and Austrailan-born editorial cartoonist for the Vancouver Province, Lew Saw. Rik Maki's own unique creative vision and sometimes bizarre (and frequently hysterical) subject matter (in addition to the sheer volume of ideas and drawings) is a delight to behold and, in many ways, reminiscent of the great pioneering Disney artist Albert Hurter. .."Quick sketches have an immediacy and a life in their first impression that you don't get with a drawing that's been tickled to death" , says Maki, "I just like the honesty and imperfections of the quick sketch. "We invite you browse through this rare and wonderful collection from one of the most prolific and influential character designers and story artists working in animation!NEW PIECES JUST ADDED ON PAGE 4 !!!* CLICK ON THUMBNAILS FOR A LARGER IMAGE *WORKS ON WHITE PAPERWORKS ON PLACEMATS - done over a stretch of time in which the artist sketched on the paper placemats at his favorite Studio City diner.
