CLUTCH CARGO, SPACE ANGEL, AND CAPTAIN FANTHOM

ORIGINAL PRODUCTION CELS, DRAWINGS, BACKGROUNDS, COMIC ART

Clutch Cargo (created by cartoonist Clark Haas), premiered in 1957 and ran until 1960. This campy , low-budget series combined limited animation with a live-action process called "Synchro-Vox", invented by Ed Gillette and first used for his famous "talking animal" commercials in the 1950's.

This process superimposed the human lips of the voice actors over the mouths of the animated characters. 26 episodes were produced over the three year run.

Haas produced three other series, "Space Angel"(Character design by Alex Toth), Doc Potts, and Captain Fanthom.

Clutch Cargo and Haas' other series are wonderful examples of early TV animation. The artwork from these series is extremely rare, in fact we believe we offer the only artwork from these series known to exist.

SPACE ANGEL

Cambria Studios produced this series from 1962 to 1964. Space Angel is actually Scott McCloud, an agent for EBI (the Earth Bureau of Investigation...an indication of the nation's obsession at the time with the FBI and spy adventures.) Reporting to EBI's Professor Mace, Scott and and Mace's daughter Crystal jet around the Solar System protecting the world in their space ship Starduster. Scott's rotund pilot and mechanic was named Taurus. The series employed the same "Synchro-Vox" technique that made Clutch Cargo so unique - human lips superimposed over the animated faces - and was beautifully designed by Alex Toth, the great comic book t and character designer who would later be responsible for creating the super heroes of Hanna-Barbera, including Space Ghost.

Like the artwork from Clutch Cargo, art from the Space Angel series is extremely rare, and we believe that Van Eaton Galleries offers the only artwork from this series known to exist.

CRYSTAL & SCOTT- Great Original Production Drawing of Crystal Mace and Scott "Space Angel" McCloud rendered in ink by Character Designer Alex Toth. The trimmed animation paper measures 7.5'x 5.75" and the character image measures 7"x 4" ...$400 (#CC178Space32)
